A Window Into Functional Communication: Leveraging Naturalistic Speech Samples in Primary Progressive Aphasia

چکیده
Purpose Naturalistic speech samples should be routinely collected in the assessment of individuals with communication difficulties. However, even when these are collected, they often underutilized. We propose that analysis naturalistic can greatly enhance our understanding and evaluation functional impact primary progressive aphasia (PPA) on communication. First, we review current practices evaluating PPA. Second, provide a framework to optimize collection, analysis, interpretation accomplish this goal. In particular, demonstrate how evaluated for measures informativeness, presence atypical patterns speech, articulatory rate, pausing, all which helpful metrics characterizing disordered speech. These factors leveraged identify both strengths difficulties an individual may face everyday Conclusion The collection clinical settings typical partners is highly recommended best diagnose, monitor, inform treatment plans

Speech Therapy in Primary Progressive Aphasia: A Pilot Study
BACKGROUND Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative disorder with no effective pharmacological treatment. Cognition-based interventions are adequate alternatives, but their benefit has not been thoroughly explored. Our aim was to study the effect of speech and language therapy (SLT) on naming ability in PPA. METHODS An open parallel prospective longitudinal study involving two...
متن کاملAutomatic speech recognition in the diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia
Narrative speech can provide a valuable source of information about an individual’s linguistic abilities across lexical, syntactic, and pragmatic levels. However, analysis of narrative speech is typically done by hand, and is therefore extremely time-consuming. Use of automatic speech recognition (ASR) software could make this type of analysis more efficient and widely available. In this paper,...
متن کاملAbnormal laughter-like vocalisations replacing speech in primary progressive aphasia
We describe ten patients with a clinical diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) (pathologically confirmed in three cases) who developed abnormal laughter-like vocalisations in the context of progressive speech output impairment leading to mutism. Failure of speech output was accompanied by increasing frequency of the abnormal vocalisations until ultimately they constituted the patient's...
متن کاملConnected speech production in three variants of primary progressive aphasia.
Primary progressive aphasia is a clinical syndrome defined by progressive deficits isolated to speech and/or language, and can be classified into non-fluent, semantic and logopenic variants based on motor speech, linguistic and cognitive features. The connected speech of patients with primary progressive aphasia has often been dichotomized simply as 'fluent' or 'non-fluent', however fluency is ...
متن کاملPrimary progressive aphasia: a review.
This review summarizes clinical and imaging features associated with primary progressive aphasia (PPA). We investigate the hypothesis that these patients can be divided into subgroups of progressive non-fluent aphasia (PNFA) and semantic dementia (SD), based on their linguistic profiles and related imaging studies, and examine whether each of these major subgroups can be further subdivided. We ...
